WhoVille Hash!

The story of "Who Hash" originates from Dr. Seuss's beloved classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas!—a whimsical tale about the Grinch's quest to ruin Christmas for the Whos of Whoville. "Who Hash" gets just a brief mention in the story, but its placement is key: it's one of the last items the Grinch steals during his Christmas Eve raid on Whoville.

In the original book, as the Grinch pilfers everything from ornaments to food, he sweeps the town's pantries clean, taking every last crumb, including the roast beast and the cans of Who Hash. This moment highlights the Grinch's determination to strip Christmas down to nothing, ensuring no morsel of joy remains.

Although the dish doesn’t get much description in the book, its whimsical name and placement in the story have sparked imaginations. Fans have long speculated about what Who Hash might actually be—a humble, hearty, and possibly canned meal made from odds and ends, much like how hash is traditionally a creative way to use leftovers.

In modern adaptations, including merchandise and themed events, "Who Hash" is often reimagined as a fun, quirky dish to pay homage to the original story. The can of Who Hash has even become an iconic visual symbol, a nod to the Grinch's mischief and eventual redemption.

In this plant-based version, the Who Hash evolves into a dish that reflects the cheerful, resourceful spirit of Whoville, turning simple ingredients into something truly magical—just like the Whos find joy in Christmas without all their material possessions. It's the perfect way to channel the Grinch's eventual change of heart into a meal that’s green, festive, and full of good cheer.

RECIPE

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 1 bell pepper, chopped (any color you have on hand)

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 cups cooked potatoes or sweet potatoes, diced

  • 2 cups cooked legumes (lentils, chickpeas, or black beans)

  • 2 cups diced vegetables (carrots, parsnips, turnips, celery, or any leftovers)

  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves or rosemary, chopped

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Vegetable broth or water (for sautéing)

  • 2 cups chopped leafy greens (spinach, kale, or cabbage) – optional

Instructions
If you’re starting with raw potatoes or root vegetables, steam or boil them until they’re just tender. Drain and set them aside. For any cooked veggies or leftovers, dice them into small, bite-sized pieces.

Heat up a large non-stick skillet over medium heat and add a splash of vegetable broth or water to keep things moving without sticking. Toss in the onion and bell pepper, letting them sauté until softened and fragrant—about 5-6 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute or two.

Add your cooked potatoes, legumes, and diced vegetables to the skillet. Sprinkle in the thyme or rosemary, along with salt, pepper, and any other seasoning that speaks to you—smoked paprika, cumin, or even a little nutritional yeast for a cheesy vibe would be fantastic. Spread everything out in the skillet and let it sit undisturbed for a few minutes to get some of those crispy golden bits going. Stir it up, repeat a couple of times, and let those flavors meld beautifully.

If you’re adding greens, toss them in during the last few minutes of cooking so they can wilt down and add a fresh pop of color and nutrients. Serve your hash warm, straight from the skillet, and if you’re feeling fancy, top it with a tofu scramble. Don’t have a recipe for tofu scramble?
